Morish conditioning

From Chrono Stars

Morish conditioning is a documented linguistic phenomenon in which languages shift in pronunciation, phonetics, or other spoken elements due to influence from the Morish language. Although the term can refer to any language changing from exposure to Morish in particular, the term is most commonly applied to languages that originate from planets other than Estvoled, where Morish is native. Morish conditioning is most pronounced throughout territories once held by Estvoldian colonists that primarily spoke Morish; in particular, Raljikka and Sigzlor had their major languages altered or entirely displaced, and some of these languages still retain traits that modern Morish no longer displays, such as the Alaminn language placing a natural emphasis on a word's final syllable.

Due to Morish's history throughout much of Ealdremen, Morish conditioning, while nominally a neutral term, tends to be perceived as a negative result of colonialism rather than a natural outcome of interplanetary trade and interaction, which is more often the case with its counterpart of Nicta-slio conditioning. Linguistic influence from Morish upon other languages was likely an inevitability through regular enough contact, but this "hypothetical" does little to mollify civilizations and cultures that feel they have lost parts of their heritage through linguistic imperialism. Counter-Morish movements are sometimes found throughout Sigzlorian nations that endeavor to "excise" Morish influence from their spoken and written languages and re-adopt native words or even entire languages that have not been used in hundreds of years.
