Numen

From Chrono Stars

A numen (plural: numina) is a vestige of power left behind by the concentrated presence of a verge god. Numina have been likened to a verge god's footprints and serve as evidence of their historical presence somewhere. A given numen can only be tied to a single verge god, and numina tend to coalesce if there are enough of them in a single spot, with longer or frequent repeated instances of a verge god's presence somewhere resulting in more numerous numina. It is theoretically possible for multiple numina of different verge gods to inhabit the same area, but this has never been documented outside of controlled artificial environments. In these cases, the numina remained separate and at their original strength.

Numina are invisible to the naked eye, requiring specialized devices or spells to be visually detectable. However, their impacts on surrounding creatures will be visible if the numen is strong enough or if there are enough of them in a concentrated area. They will warp living organisms and inanimate objects in their image or according to their power; in some cases, those attempting to harness the power of a numen have been known to behave in manners similar to spells that alter a subject's state of mind or even bequeath control of the subject's body to the caster entirely. Because of this, numina are not considered a reliable or secure source of power, but religious devotees to verge gods (or those who believe numina to be manifestations of some other divine force) are often drawn to them and view the personality changes of individuals in contact with numina as their god speaking through them.

The effects of weaker numina will dissipate in time when the subject has been separated from the numen for a long enough time, but strong numina can cause permanent changes to landscapes and even entire species, becoming ingrained in an organism's genes and passing its effects through generations. Genes granted by numina tend to universally dominate "naturally occurring" counterparts and alleles. It is not known what might occur should a given individual have the potential to inherit genes from different verge gods' numina, as experiments on numina's effects on living organisms have been outlawed near-universally for the ethical concerns.

Numina weaken over time; a stronger numen often indicates a more recently created one. Specific verge gods' numina decay at different rates correlating with their assumed power relative to other verge gods.

The valtheri species is generally agreed upon to have been created through the effects of numina left behind by the verge god 48-5: Pursuer, the subject of their ancestral worship.
